THE FIVE JOYFUL MYSTERIES

1. The Annunciation Luke 1:26 – 38
"The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And when the angel had come to her, he said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women" . . . . And he said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God. Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he shall be king over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end." . . ."The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee and the Power of the Most High shall overshadow thee; and therefore the Holy One to be born shall be called the Son of God. . . . Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word."

2. The Visitation Luke 1:41
"Mary went with haste into the hill country, to a town of Judah. And she entered the house of Zachary and saluted Elizabeth . . . when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe in her womb leapt. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb! And how have I deserved that the mother of my Lord should come to me?"

3. The Birth of Our Lord Luke 2: 10-14
"And the angel said to the shepherds, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which shall be to all the people; for today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you who is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign to you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men of good will."

4. The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple Luke 2: 22-35
"And when the days of her purification were fulfilled, according to the Law of Moses, they took Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. . . And behold, there was in Jerusalem a man named Simeon, and this man was just and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death until he had seen the Christ of the Lord. And when his parents brought in the Child Jesus . . . he received him into his arms and blessed them saying: Now do you dismiss your servant in peace, O Lord, according to your word; because my eyes have seen the salvation which your have prepared in the sight of every people: a light to reveal you to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel." . . "And Simeon said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is destined for rise and the fall of many in Israel, and for a sign that shall be contradicted. And your own soul a sword shall pierce, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."

5. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple Luke 2: 45-52
"And not finding Jesus, they returned to Jerusalem in search of him. And after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who were listening to him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when his parents saw Jesus, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, "Son, why have you done this to us? Behold, in sorrow your father and I have been searching for you." And he said to them, "How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s work?" And they did not understand the words he spoke to them. And he went down with them to Nazareth and was subject to them; and his mother kept all these things carefully in her heart. "

THE FIVE MYSTERIES OF LIGHT (Luminous Mysteries)

1. The Baptism of Jesus at the Jordan Luke 3: 2-
"And the word of God came to John, the son of Zachary, in the desert. And he went into all the regions about the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Matthew 3: 13
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John was for hindering him, and said, "It is I who ought to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered and said to him, "Let it be so for now, for it becomes us to fulfill all justice." He then permitted him. And when Jesus had been baptized, he immediately came up from the water. And the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and coming upon him. And a voice from the heavens said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

2. Jesus Changes Water into Wine at the Wedding Feast of Cana John 2:1-11
"A marriage took place at Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now Jesus too was invited to the marriage, and also his disciples. And the wine having run short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "What would thou have me do, woman? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the attendants, "Do whatever he tells you."  Now six stone water-jars were placed there . . . each holding two or three measures. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them to the brim. And Jesus said to them, "Draw out now, and take to the chief steward." And they took it to him. Now when the chief steward had tasted the water after it had become wine, not knowing whence it was (though the attendants who had drawn the water knew), the chief steward called the bridegroom and said to him, "Every man at first sets forth the good wine, and when they have drunk freely, then that which is poorer. But you have kept the good wine until now. This first of his signs Jesus worked at Cana of Galilee; and he manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him. "

3. Jesus Proclaims the Kingdom of God and His Call For Conversion Mark 1:15
"And after John had been delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel."

4. The Transfiguration of Jesus Luke 9: 35
"Jesus took Peter, James and John and went up the mountain to pray. And as he prayed, the appearance of his countenance was changed, and his garments became a radiant white. And behold, two men were talking with him. And these were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory, spoke of his death, which he was about to fulfill in Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were heavy with sleep. But when they were fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men who were standing with him. As they were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here. And let us set up three tents, one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah" not knowing what he said. But as he was speaking, a cloud overshadowed them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is my beloved Son; hear him." And after the voice had passed, Jesus was found alone. "

5. Jesus Institutes the Sacrament of the Eucharist Matthew 26: 26-28

"And while they were at supper, Jesus took bread, and blessed it and broke it, and gave it to his disciples and said, "Take this and eat it; this is my body." And taking a cup, he gave thanks and gave it to them, saying, "All of you drink of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is being shed for many unto the forgiveness of sins.

THE FIVE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES

1. The Agony in the Garden Luke 22: 42
"And he came out and went according to his custom to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him. But when he was at the place, he said to them, "Pray, that you may not enter into temptation." And he himself withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and kneeling down, he began to pray, saying, "Father, if thou art willing, remove this cup from me; yet not my will but thine be done." And there appeared to him an angel from heaven to strengthen him. And falling into an agony he prayed the more earnestly. And his sweat became as drops of blood running down upon the ground. And rising from prayer he came to the disciples, and found them sleeping for sorrow. And he said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, that you may not enter into temptation."

2. The Scourging at the Pillar Mark 15: 12
"Pilate again spoke and said to the crowd "What then do you want me to do to the king of the Jews?" But they cried out again, "Crucify him! But Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has he done? But they kept crying out the more, "Crucify him!" So Pilate, whishing to satisfy the crowd, released to them Barabbas; but Jesus he scourged and delivered to be crucified."

3. The Crowing of Thorns Mark 15
"Now the soldiers led him away into the courtyard of the praetorium and they called together the whole cohort. And they clothed him in purple, and weaving a crown of thorns, they put it upon him and began to greet him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they kept striking him on the head with a reed and spitting upon him; and bending their knees, they did homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own garments on him, and let him out to crucify him. "

4. The Carrying of the Cross Mark 15: 16
"As the soldiers led Jesus away, they laid hold of a certain Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, and upon him they laid the cross to bear it after Jesus. Now there was following him a great crowd of the people and of women, who were bewailing and lamenting him. But Jesus turning to them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, days are coming in which men will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall upon us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us!’ . . Now there were also two other criminals led to execution with him. "

5. The Crucifixion and Death of Our Lord on the Cross Luke 23: 33-44
And when they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, and the robbers, one on his right hand and the other on his left. And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing." Now in dividing his garments, they cast lots. And the people stood looking on; and the rulers with them kept sneering at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ, the chosen one of God." And the soldiers also mocked him coming to him and offering him common wine, and saying "If thou are the King of the Jews, save thyself!" And there was also an inscription written over him in Greek and Latin and Hebrew letters saying, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Now one of those robbers who was hanged was abusing him, saying "If thou are the Christ, save thyself and us!" But the other in answer rebuked him and said, "Do not even you fear God, seeing that you are under the same sentence? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving what our deeds deserved; but this man has done nothing wrong." And he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom." And Jesus said to him, "Amen I say to you, this day you will be with me in paradise."
It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the curtain of the temple was torn in the middle. And Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." And having said this, he expired."

THE FIVE GLORIOUS MYSTERIES

1. The Resurrection of Our Lord from the Dead Luke 24:1

On the first day of the week at early dawn, the women came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared, and they found the stone rolled back from the tomb. But on entering, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, while they were wondering what to make of this, two men stood by them in dazzling garments. And when the women were struck with fear and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, "Why do you seek the living one among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he spoke to you while he was yet in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified and on the third day rise."

2. The Ascension of Our Lord into Heaven Matthew 28:16

"And Jesus drew near to the eleven disciples said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you all days, even unto the consummation of the world."
Luke 24: 50
"Now he led them out towards Bethany, and he lifted up his hands and blessed them. And as he blessed them he departed from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy and they were continually in the Temple praising God. "

3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles Acts 2: 1
And when the days of Pentecost were drawing to a close, they were all gathered together in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a violent wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues, as of fire, which settled upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in foreign tongues, even as the Holy Spirit prompted them to speak.
Now there were staying at Jerusalem devout Jews from every nation under heaven. And when this sound was heard, the multitude gathered and were bewildered in mind, because each heard them speaking in his own language.

4. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven Luke 1:46
"And Mary said: "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; because he has regarded the lowliness of his handmaid; for behold henceforth all generations shall call me blessed; because he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name."

5. The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven Rev 12: 1
"And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon was under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars."
